Haier plans to launch 1,500 air conditioner outlets in 2009

Sep. 9, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Qingdao Haier Co Ltd<600690>, China's largest listed home appliance producer, said the company plans to open 1,500 air conditioner specialty stores across China with the total investment of RMB 100 million in 2009, sources cited Su Ming, director of Haier's air conditioner marketing department. The new 1,500 air conditioner retail stores will be launched in third and fourth-tier Chinese cities, including 102 in Henan Province and 50 in Hunan Province, said Su. Due to the snow storms, Sichuan earthquake and a rather cool summer season in 2008, sales of air conditioners only grew 4.2% year on year with 31.048 million units being sold, compared with the growth rate for the previous year was 20.2%. Meanwhile, the production cost increased by RMB 100 to RMB 200, which further narrowed the manufacturers' profit margin. Therefore, Haier is seeking to reinforce its cooperation with local distributors and introduce more energy-saving models in a bid to grab a bigger share next year.
